The Aurora Surfrider Association, Inc.(ASRAI) is a group of organized surfers from Baler in cooperation with the Aurora Tourism office. will be holding our annual surfing competition entitled “8 Aurora Surfing Challenge 2014” from Feb 13- 16 at Sabang Beach, Cemento Reef in Baler, Aurora. The four-days event will showcase Baler as one of the premier surfing destinations in the country while promoting camaraderie among local and international surfers. This will also raise awareness on protecting the environment and help minimize the impact of climate change.

This event is the kick-off in celebration of Aurora Day Celebration to provide a fair-like atmosphere for diverse groups such as Skim boarders, Long boarders and Skate boarders that will also conduct demonstrations, competitions and exhibit their unique talents.

5 Reasons To Surf in Baler, Aurora

1. Baler is where surfing was born in the Philippines.
History buffs know Baler, Aurora to be the birthplace of the Philippine Commonwealth under Pres. Manuel L. Quezon. We know that because the Baler Museum stands as a testament to that moment in our history. But film buffs know something else that was born in Baler: surfing.

In the 1979 cult classic Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Ford Coppola, we hear a surf-mad Colonel Kilgore coaxing his American army unit to ride the waves against the Viet-Cong which he nicknamed "Charlie." The famous line goes, "Charlie don't surf," believing Vietnam to sink in the war.

That scene was shot in a then obscure beach which actually wasn't in Vietnam. It was in the Philippines. More specifically, Baler. After the director declared, "It's a wrap!" and the crew has packed up, some of the actors and crew left their surfboards behind. A ten-year-old boy named Eric Nomoro picked those boars as his spoils after the war.

Nomoro, having no one to teach him how to surf, gathered his friends together and took it upon themselves to learn on their own. Thus, surfing became a sport in the Philippines, sprouting many other surf spots throughout the archipelago.

2. Baler boasts of 2.7 meter high waves.
That's almost 9 feet high, taller than most basketball players. And the world knows it. Surfers from all over the globe go to Baler to conquer these gigantic waves, especially during surfing season in the Philippines, that is September to February. The summer months of May to early June has calm waves and are perfect for beginners.

3. Baler has stunning geography.
Baler seems almost a secret. Tucked between the tall Sierra Madre mountain ranges and the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean, it is a haven for the tourist who wants to be truly one with nature. A surfing trip to Baler defines for us what a true vacation is.

4. Beyond the surf, there's a unique Eco-trek.
When you need to have your feet on solid ground again, you can take a trek through a historical trail from Baler Church and up Ermita Hill. You'll pass by many beautiful waterfalls (feel free to jump in!) and many commemorative monuments. Optional treks for shameless landlubbers can be arranged up Mount Udok or Mount Maaling-aling. These tours are arranged by the Department of Tourism in cooperation with Baler's local government.

5. The prices are friendly.

For P 300 to P 400 per hour, you can learn to surf, and there are many local surf shops that give lessons. That covers the rent for a board (if you don't already have one), and an instructor who will be with you all throughout the surfing experience.
